Bantam

Granbury 2 really did decide to win 40-0. That's incredible against another great team. Burleson finished above all the other teams.

Minor

I was really hoping Granbury 1 could pull off just one more upset. They got considerably better in the second half of the season and playoffs but Midlothian 1 had their eyes on the prize.

Major

Two very good teams but Burleson 1 just refuses to lose. Cleburne 2 didn't let them have an easy day, though.

It seems that Bantam Midlothian 2, Minor Cleburne 2, and Major Whitney aren't excited about yesterday's wins. Or losses. Maybe Bantam Midlothian 2, Minor Cleburne 1, and Major Granbury 2 weren't excited about their upsets. Or did they? We can only wonder. Note on Ratings

Still no clear picture of what teams are better. Next week it will be a lot clearer but on week five we should have a much better idea. It has always puzzled me as to why the teams that won don't always get their scores in very quickly. When I played sports and we won I made a point to tell people how we did. Where's that enthusiasm? I'm no longer going to hold up the teams that get their scores in because a few teams have trouble. The teams that haven't turned them in will be down at the bottom. With this system, if you don't turn in your scores, you only get to see the other teams move up. How about some scores, folks?

Notes on Ratings

There isn't much to see yet. All the teams that won have a 110, all the teams that lost have a 100, and all the teams that tied have a 105. That's not the normal way to treat a tie but on the first week there has to be a method to place tying teams above those who haven't won and below those who haven't lost. After the first week this won't be used. Next week each team will use their current ratings as their starting rating (instead of 100 if they are higher) and the first two games will be recalculated. That will tell a lot more about how good the teams are than this week's ratings. This method only tells a team's estimated strength by whom they beat and whom they lose to, not by the points they rack up.

Ratings Change

This season I am going to use a rating system that is simple to understand and it's fun. It also has won awards competing against very complicated computer rating systems on Todd Beck's site for those who are familiar with that. For this site I will call them the King of the Hill Ratings. They work like this:

Each team begins with a rating of 100.
If your team beats the other team you pick up 10% of their rating.
If your team is upset by a team with a lower rating your rating drops by one third of the difference between the ratings of the two teams.
If your team loses and was not supposed to win nothing happens.
If there is a tie the higher rated team loses one third of the difference and the lesser rated team gains one third of the difference.

On the second and third weeks I will use the current ratings as the starting rating and run through all the games played to accelerate the early order of the teams. That will not be necessary from the fourth week forward.

In this system you earn your points (hopefully) and the best teams rise to the top. It is not as accurate as the system I use in the other football categories but it has proved itself, is easy to understand, and is fun. Have a good time.
