Note on Final Ratings

If your team finished at the top and won the championship as well, that's great. That's what was supposed to happen. Fortunately teams don't pay attention to ratings in playoffs because they get excited and more determined than during the regular season. So if your team won the championship but didn't finish at number one, that's even better. You took on the better team and showed them who was boss that day. You may or may not be the best team but when you beat every team in the playoffs you are the champion. And no team will be able to take that title away. Teams go up and down in the ratings but the champion stays the champion forever.

Since I started posting predictions this season it has been pretty boring. Each week I missed one game. Every week. You know what's exciting about the playoffs, though? The ratings don't mean a thing. The Minor games went as expected. There was a tie in the Majors. But in the Bantams there were three upsets in four games. That's my kind of football. Congratulations to Midlothian 2, Kennedale, and Alvarado 1 for making things exciting. They've proved it can be done. Now the rest of you underdogs get out there and keep the excitement going.

Great Question

Question: I'm confused by Guru Ray's rankings. In the Bantam Division, how is it possible that a two loss Burleson is ranked second ahead of two one loss teams -- Midlothian 1 and Alvarado 2? This is especially confusing since both of those teams' only loss was to first place Crowley and Burleson's two losses were to those two teams.

There isn't really a discrepancy here. Both teams beat Burleson by only two points, one in overtime. The two teams in question lost to Crowley by 46 and 28 points. Of the four losses only two were decisive. We'll have more clarity when Burleson plays Crowley. As far as teams played in common - Joshua 1 and Joshua 2 - neither of the teams in question have beaten their opponent by more than Burleson did. Burleson summed points against all teams played are +164. Midlothian 1 is +122 and Alvarado is +90. The two Burleson losses were very close and could have gone either way. There is not enough evidence to say Burleson doesn't belong in the spot above the other teams. Evidence will come from the remaining weeks of the season and the playoffs. It is a good question but it carries no more weight than asking why Alvarado 2 isn't ahead of Midlothian 1 because they played so much better against Crowley. Yet against the other common opponents Midlothian 1 beat them by more than Alvarado 2. In common games between the teams in question Burleson is +68 against Midlothian 1's +68. Burleson is +28 against Alvarado 2's +30.  Nothing to give an edge. Teams have good days and bad days. That's what football is all about. We can't be sure which teams had the good ones and which had the bad ones until we play more games. Burleson doesn't play Crowley during the regular season so we'll have to see what happens in the playoffs. Take a look at the teams next week and we'll see what changes.

Minor Division – Alvarado 1 (87.2), Midlothian 2 (91.3) & Whitney (86.0)

Major Division – Alvarado 1 (101.2), Burleson 2 (123.0) & Crowley (108.7)

On the final weekend of the regular season four of those teams play each other – these are games you might want to go and check out:

The Answers to a Couple of Questions

Someone asked a question about Cleburne 2 and Hillsboro (Question about the Ratings - September 22). The question was why Cleburne 2 dropped in the rating when they won and Hillsboro rose even though they lost. The simple answer is that Cleburne 2's opponents' ratings had collectively fallen and Hillsboro's opponents' collective ratings had risen.

Follow-up

During the season Cleburne 2 and Hillsboro have had three common opponents. Here's how they scored:

I expected someone to ask how 3-0 Midlothian 2 could be ranked so low. At the time the only teams they had played were ranked below them. There was other team ranked below them that they had not played.

This week Midlothian 2 played the other team ranked lower, Kennedale, and lost a great game by only two points. The game was a great battle and turned out as it should have due to home field advantage. It is quite possible that some or all of these five teams will move as they link up with more opponents.

Question about the Ratings

Can you explain to me exactly how the ratings are done? My coaches and I have been watching the past three weeks and we can't for the life of us figure out how they compile the information to come up with the ratings. This past weekend Hillsboro lost, we won, we dropped they either rose or stayed the same. Alvarado 2 had a bye
and they passed us. Doesn't make sense to me. Could enlighten me a little please?

The ratings treat each game the same. Since they started from scratch, all teams began with the same rating. The season rating is the average of all the team's games. Since this is only the third week the ratings are not very well tied together. After the first week the team rating is based on one team, its opponent. The second week its rating is based on up to three teams. After three weeks it is based on up to seven teams. If the teams were infinite, by the ninth week a team's rating could be affected by as many as 511 different teams. Each week more teams are tied together by playing one or more common opponents and each week they become more accurate. It is not unusual for a team that lost to rise in the ratings if most of the teams they have played did better than usual the past week. Even if a team doesn't play, its rating will probably go up or down. This early in the season there is a lot of movement based on a team's opponents and their opponents and their opponents, etc. So instead of looking at one game we have to look at all the games because the latest outcome of any game affects many teams ratings.
